I was a Catholic boy but I wanted people to be able to go to my fights and not feel any threat, just come together. I was in an out of conflict areas, amongst tricolours, Union flags, murals… the Shankill Working Men’s club, Gerry Storey’s club in the New Lodge. My father sang Danny Boy before my title fights because it was a song that belonged to everyone. Cynics said it was a commercial decision but that was a load of bollocks. ‘I had a son, he died last year. When he reached a certain age he was telling me, why? How can you explain to him? Well he knew. I did tell him when he was 12 that he was HIV positive. But then you know its like ‘mum, where did I get it from?’ ‘Ah, from me!’ and it was really painful. I love you so much my son – I am sorry, I didn’t want, I didn’t want you to be sick, and its not only sick, its bad. Can you imagine?’ (HIV+ woman, UK, ICW forthcoming)
